For Guinea Pigs

 
1.   Acepromazine--- 0.1-0.5 mg/kg IM
2.   Acetylsalicylic Acid---270 mg/kg once daily IP
3.   Amikacin---10 mg/kg q12h,q8h, IM,SC
4.   Amitraz (Mitaban)(make up as per package directions)---Apply topically 3-6 treatments 14 days apart.     CAUTION: may dilute more
5.   Amphotericin---0.5ml, PO, IV
6.   Ampicillin---DO NOT USE
7.   Atropine(Bronchodilator & increases heart rate)---0.1-0.2 mg/kg
       IM,  SC;  organophosphate poisoning=100 g/kg SC
8.   BENE-BAC(used when guinea pigs are taking antibiotics.)--1gm,q24h PO
9.   Betamethosone acetate (Betavet) (for inflammation,itching,cardiac & septic shock, trauma, & edema of DNS & spinal cord.) 0.1-0.3 ml, SC
10. Bromhexine (Breaks up mucous, assists coughing) 0.2 ml, SC working on the rest of the medications
11. Carbaryl 5% powder (Diryl) Dust lightly once a week
12. Cephalexin 50mg/kg IM divided q12h use 14 days against Strep     
 13. Chloramphenicol palmitate -(Chloromycetin) (For H.  infuenzaea  &  Mycoplasma-which cause lung infections) 50mg/kg q12h PO
14. Chloramphenicol succinate (For H. influenzae & Mycoplasma-which cause lung infections) 30-50 mg/kg q12h IM,SC
15. Chlorpromazine  25mg/kg SC
16. Cimetidine 5-10 mg/kg q6-12h
17. Dexamethasone (Azium, Tresaderm) (For inflammation & itching) 0.1 to 0.6mg/kg IM,SC; ketosis IM
18. Dextrose 50% (For energy if not eating) 1-2 ml,SC
19. Diazepam  2.5 mg/kg IP
20.Dichlorvos -impregnated resin strip (Vapona No Pest Strip) Follow package directions for room size; Hang in room 24 hours once weekly for six weeks.
21. Diovol Plus  0.5-1 ml PO as needed
22. Doxapram (stimulates lungs) 10-15 mg/kg IM, SC;5 mg/kg IV
23. Doxycycline 2.5 mg/kg q12h PO
24. Enrofloxacin (Baytril) (kills E. coli & K. pneumoniae) 2.5 mg/kg q12h PO
25. Etamiphylline camsylate (Millophyline) (stimulates heart & lungs)     0.1-0.2 ml IM, PO
26. Fenbendazole (Panacur) (kills worms) 20 mg/kg PO q24h ,5 days
27. Furazolidone  5.5 mg/ml drinking water
28. Furosemide (Lasix) (Increases fluid output) 5-10 mg/kg q12h
29. Gentamicin  5 mg/kg q24h IM, SC
30. Griseofulvin (kills Trichophyton, Microsporum, & Epidermophyton) 15-25 mg/kg PO q24h 14 to 28 days (can dose up to 100 mg/kg)
31. Human Chorionic Gonadotropin  1000 USP units IM repeat 7 to 10 days
32. Innovar-Vet 10% solution   0.2-0.4 ml/kg IM  
33. Isoflurane   To effect
34. Ivermectin (Kills Sarcopetes scabiei mites and lice) 300 mg/kg, repeat in 8 to 10 days SC,  poor oral absorption.
35. Kaopectate liquid  0.2 ml  PO q6-8h/per adult; symptomatically
36. Ketamine   44 mg/kg IP
37. Ketamine + Diazepam  20-30 mg/kg + 1-2 mg/kg IM
38. Ketamine + Xylazine  44 mg/kg + 5 mg/kg IP
39. Lime Sulfur (2.5% solution) Apply once weekly for 4-6 weeks
40. Lindane (0.3% solution) Dip once weekly for 3 weeks
41. Malathion (2% solution) Dip every 10 days for 3 weeks
42. Meperidine 1-2 mg/kg IM, SC
43. Methylprednisolone Acetate (Medrol) 0.2ml, SC
44. Metoclopramide (Reglan 5 mg/ml) (Stimulates appetite) 0.5 mg/kg SC q8h, as needed
45. Morphine  10 mg/kg IM, SC q4h
46. Naloxone  0.01-0.1 mg/kg IP, IV
47.Neomycin & Succinylsulfathiazole (For diarrhea & enteritis) 5 mg/kg PO q12h, up to 30 mg/kg once daily PO
48. Nitrofurazone  50 mg/kg  PO q24h for 3 days
49. Orbifloxacin (Orbax) 2.5 to 7.5 mg/kg PO q24h
50. Oxytocin     1 IU/guinea pig IM, SC
51. Piperazine adipate  4-7 mg/ml in drinking water for 3-10 days
52. Piperazine cirate 10 mg/ml in drinking water for 7 days; off  7 days; on 7 days
53. Praziquantel  5-10 mg/kg IM, SC , PO repeat in 10 days
54. Prednisone 0.5 to 2 mg/kg, PO
55. Penicillin  DO NOT USE
56. Sulfamethazine (Sulmet, Sulfabrom)   (For coccidiosis & enteritis)  1 to 5 mg/ml drinking water
57. Sulfaquinoxaline    1 mg/ml drinking water
58. Tetracycline   5 mg/kg IM q8h, 10-20 mg/kg q8h PO, or 50 mg/kg per day in 3 divided doses PO
59. Thiabendazole   100 mg/kg PO for 5 days
60. Thiopental    20-55 mg/kg IP
61. Tresaderm   1 drop per ear daily for 3 to 5 days
62. Trimethoprim Sulfadiazine  20 mg/kg once daily, SC=0.5 ml/kg SC/day
63. Trimethoprim 20 mg (Bactrim) Sulfamethoxazole or Sulfadiazine 100 mg (for urinary tract, ear, and lung infections) 15 mg/kg q12h PO, 1/4 tablet/adult cavy q24h crush into powder, can give divided dose q12h
64. Vitamin C (used when guinea pig is not eating or drinking well) 10-30 mg/kg IM, PO, 200-400 mg/L drinking water daily
65. Vitamin K1 (malabsorption due to long term antibiotic use) 1-10 mg/kg as needed
66. Xendyne  Swab infected areas as needed
